Ghosting: Unanswered Messages.

Why silence in relationships can hurt more than goodbye?
Sometimes the problem isn’t that someone left, but that they simply never replied. In the world of digital communication, this silence often has a name: ghosting in relationships. A conversation left mid-air, words abandoned without a full stop. In principle, life moves on. In practice, part of us continues to wait. Quietly, persistently, holding on to the faintest trace of hope.
This absence hurts discreetly. No scenes. No drama. Only stillness. An empty space where a presence once was, and a quiet question about whether this is truly the end. We search for closure in relationships, but no answer arrives. Not even a polite goodbye.
People fade away in different ways. Some loosen their ties gently, like light dimming with the evening. Others vanish at once, with a single tap, offering neither explanation nor farewell. And we are left with the unfinished. Thoughts that turn in circles, trying to understand why people disappear without a word. An illusion that perhaps one day they will reach out again. By chance. From elsewhere. As someone altogether changed.
Those who leave in silence rarely return. Not because we slipped their minds, but because they were never prepared to stay. Something in them went dark, and they chose not to rekindle it. Or perhaps they came only for what they hoped to gain and, finding nothing to take, departed.
So we learn to live with messages without conclusions. Pages torn from a book halfway through a sentence. Slowly we accept that not every story is meant to be resolved and that unanswered messages are part of the human experience. Not every ‘I’ll be in touch’ carried meaning. Sometimes the most eloquent response is silence.
And perhaps it is a blessing that silence arrived early.
Someone who can disappear today would have disappeared just the same a year from now. Or five. The wound would only cut deeper. Their silence does not define us. It reveals their fears, their comforts, their inability to stand close to another heart.
And still we move forward. A touch more cautious, perhaps. More attentive. Yet open. Because not every unanswered message is a failure. At times, ghosting becomes a quiet salvation disguised as loss, a space where we eventually find ourselves again.
